McLaren’s reading of Oscar Piastri’s Spa deficit to Lando Norris points away from the cockpit and toward the power unit. According to the reporting, the team suspects the gap had “nothing to do with his driving” and instead came from Formula 1 power-unit algorithms, with deployment and derating playing the key role rather than any obvious difference in how the two drivers attacked the lap.

That matters because the deficit was small on paper — about two tenths in qualifying — but the sources say virtually all of it came on the straight between Stavelot and the Bus Stop Chicane. In other words, the comparison between the two McLaren drivers was shaped heavily by the car’s energy-management behavior at the end of the lap, when the power unit is beginning to run out of electrical assistance and the cars enter the derating phase.

The Spa example is revealing because it shows how a modern qualifying margin can be created by systems that are mostly invisible to the naked eye. In a previous era, a gap of this sort might have been read straightforwardly as a driver-versus-driver comparison. Now, though, the lap time also depends on deployment maps, control software, and the exact point at which hybrid assistance tapers off. If one car is managed differently from the other, the stopwatch may reflect that difference even when the drivers themselves are performing at a very similar level.

That does not mean the drivers are irrelevant. It means the context around the lap matters more than ever. F1’s power units are not simply engines in the old sense; they are tightly managed energy systems, and the algorithms governing them can produce hidden performance differences between teammates. A driver can look as if he has lost time through braking, cornering, or commitment, when in reality the decisive swing may come from straight-line deployment a few hundred metres later. The Spa case makes that problem unusually clear because the reported deficit was concentrated in one specific section of track.
